English 111: A Personal Reflection

This class provided an excellent opportunity to interact with my peers and discuss things in class with a certain sense of maturity that I had never experienced in high school. By the time our inquiry 4 project rolled around I was comfortable enough with my professor as well as my peers to share things in my life that I have shared with only a small number of other people.

This class has helped me gain a lot of maturity in a short time. Obviously, I have grown as a writer but the acquisition of this maturity in my life as a result of this class is something that is very important and something that I am extraordinarily grateful for. As I have previously mentioned I got more and more comfortable as a writer as this semester went on.

I was rather unfamiliar with writing higher-level personal narratives. In my first inquiry I wrote a paper that was supposed to have a focus on a personal narrative that was a significant experience in creating literacy for me. While I discussed a certain experience in my life I was rather vague and too broad with my story. I focused more on portraying facts to my audience rather than describing my story and that hurt the quality of my paper.

By the time inquiry 4 rolled around I was a vastly different writer. My personal narrative by this point was well defined and I described it with a great deal of emotion. Although this was not a written essay I feel like my narrative was much more effective in connecting with viewers than my first narrative. The contrast in quality between work in my first and fourth inquiry is an excellent example of my growth as a scholar throughout this semester. As a person it is important to stand for something and have views on controversial issues.

Before this class I tended to avoid social and political conflict. I tried to remain as neutral as possible on all subjects in an effort to not anger anyone I was interacting with. However, after a few discussions in this class I quickly formed views on things and opinions that I felt rather strong about. I, just like many others, love that video as well as the song. However, when you really look at it this video is racist and well as slanderous. The way the public portrays this man gives him a reputation that may not be accurate or fair.

This made me really examine the media in our country and look at if people are portrayed fairly. Also, the recent article we read by Ann Coulter was something that really lit a fire in me. It pushed me to really look at things thoroughly and think about how I feel about them and this is a truly important quality to have. If a person has nothing to stand for what will they turn to? Luckily as a result of this class I have learned to form opinions on important issues in our society.

My experiences in this class have also helped me become a better student overall. This class played a huge role in me learning how to be a successful college student. In High School, teachers guided us through everything and we were seemingly never on our own to do anything. This class was very different than any high school English class I have ever been a part of. Getting a feel for having class only twice a week was something very unique that took some time for me to adjust to.

Also, the structure of this class gave us a great deal of freedom on how we wanted to do things. I feel like learning how to succeed in a college environment is something that will be very important for my continued success as a college student.

Qualities such as self-motivation and a truly dedicated work ethic are things that were enhanced as a result of me being a part of this class. So when it came time to write this paper I had to learn how to write it correctly and really focus on the citation and format, it was too much.

Also research is very time consuming and none of that time was enjoyable. I constantly just wanted to put it off another day, until it was due and what I had in front of me was not the quality I was looking for. Each writer has their strengths and weaknesses. Usually my strengths are outweighed by my weaknesses. Things I really struggle with are things like grammar and MLA format so when it comes time to write I could have great content that is really interesting but my grade is squashed by sentence fragments and mechanical errors.

In most of my papers I mainly focus on the content. I feel I have had a very interesting life, though I am only twenty years old I feel I have experienced much. I always have an interesting topic as soon as a project is assigned, which could also be one of my flaws.

If I sat and thought about the assignment a little longer maybe I could have found better topics or subjects for some of my essays, especially the research paper. Me as a writer has definitely developed. Throughout this semester I have felt myself feeling more confident and comfortable as well as much better at seeing and picking up errors.

When doing the revisions on the major papers Prof. I think after next semester when I take my next English class I will be getting to the point of a good writer. Though I have never enjoyed writing I have found there is an easier way to do it, writing as a process. It makes writing so much easier but it is still tough if you are like me a procrastinator. If you do an essay one piece at a time, start with invention work then a first draft, critique it and do a final draft you are guaranteed to have a better paper.

This is my sixth semester here at Central Piedmont. I have been a full time student every semester taking automotive classes. I have done everything from rebuilding engines to dropping transmissions and for me this has definitely been my toughest class. Your mind does all the work. But with practice and good teaching anyone can develop themselves into a great writer.
